Does that not mean that AB11CDE must be still recorded somewhere and 'remembered' for that specific car?

It'll go back into the bank of registration numbers. Unless someone wants to buy it from DVLA, that's where it will stay. It just won't show up on any tax, insurance or mot databases until it is assigned to a vehicle. Same as any registration you can find on here. https://dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk/

When you check those databases, you are looking for a specific registration attached to a vehicle. Not the registration on its own.

I doubt if it will be on there. When a reg number is issued, a replacement mot certificate is issued for the same vehicle with the new number on and the old one is removed from the system. Same with the tax and insurance databases.

This is getting interesting! As that is a DVLA site I didn't expect it to know the car, but it does. Says MOT expired, and evidently not been renewed.
But this DVLA site, the one I was on before, Vehicle tax and MOT does not recognise it. So it might be down to the DVLA not getting their act together. Also a non-DVLA site Know Your Car recognises it and also says MOT expired.

Have you tried https://know-yourcar.co.uk/

I use the app which is free. See all the old mot and if failed or passed.

Seems it shows information on cars that is not on dvla site. May help

That's the site I called Know Your Car. I didn't post a link as I couldn't get it to delete my reg nos, and while it's no great secret I didn't want to post them on a public forum. Thanks anyway.

Thanks, but I've sussed it now. Options - My vehicles - Remove vehicles.
