That's not necessarily a good thing, why can't you get it checked at the original garage?

Because Halfords are pretty rubbish and may well say you need new brakes or some other nonsense especially to the uninitiated.

That is not good, and for two reasons - First they will only be interested in do the brakes work properly or not, they will not be interested in the squeaking. Second, they use the free tests as a means of generating business - they will be looking for the tiniest of issues, to try to persuade you to pay for work doing and not limited to your brakes. There is a valid business reason why they offer these 'free' checks.
