Garden hose won't fit outdoor tap

I wonder if the old one might have had a tapered thread? BSP fittings are sometimes parallel and sometimes tapered.

I agree that fitting a new tap might be simplest. You can get a special copper pipe with fitted tap adaptor and backplate that pokes through the wall. https://www.screwfix.com/search?search=hose+union Saves making your own. The less plumbing exposed to outside frost the better.

is a very good isolator to use inside the house. The handle gives good leverage and you can see at a glance if it is on or off.

I try to remember to turn mine off after washing the car, but certainly off in frosty weather.
