Gas Safe Work Placement

Can some of the Gas Safe registered people advise me what the current situation is with regards to getting a work placement to build-up the required portfolio to do the ACS assessment?

I found a training centre offering gas training and a work (presumably unpaid) placement.

Is this the usual route nowadays or do companies still employ trainees?

Before anyone starts on the usual tirade about fast-track wannabes (Hi, Dick), it's not for me, but for a 23-year old who completed his NVQ3 in plumbing and heating 3 years ago. Since then he was been working for a company doing domestic work, but they won't provide any signed evidence of his having done gas-related work. I'd imagine that's because it's in their interests to keep him on low wages as an unqualified worker and they don't want any more competitors.

Is there anyone in the North East London area (Walthamstow, Chingford, Ilford) area who might take on a trainee or can anyone recommend any means of finding an employer?

I know a couple of them and will speak to them and PM you. (Ilford based) assuming they haven't taken anyone on at the moment, always very busy with call outs in North East London.

First of all it is important in the long term that we do train new people so that there is an adequate trained reserve of people.

Second, I don't take people from too close by.

Third they can be very helpful to take on some jobs which I don't want to do.

More recently one of them has emigrated to Spain and another to Bristol. They both refer London jobs to me now. Even if sometimes it results in more than I want to be doing.

Puller gas, If one does not pass knowledge, talents and experiences to others wanting to learn, then if I can say you are acting very selfish, and your knowledge is worthless. If you keep it all to yourself, it would only die with you and not live on, If you do pass it on, someone somewhere would appreciate your kind help, knowledge and respect and your legacy lives on. That guy would remember you for as long as he lives.

I still respect, admire, and thank the guy who taught me how various components worked, this in the days when there was no internet, text books were expensive, librarys were empty of technical books, unfortunately my master is now gone , his legacy lives on, he was my work colleague, he did not see or feel me as a threat and one day my boss fired him for taking many days off work as his mother passed away, my boss thought I would be able to take his place, I knew all what he could do, but I lied to my boss that certain things only he knew, and I cannot do as I don't know how to do, my boss thought i knew all aspects of our job, and I did, but I lied to my boss and said sorry boss I am afraid I don't know how everything was done, certain processes only he could do I said, and insisted to my boss to reinstate him, who was devastated on loosing his mother, and father earlier, and was all alone, no brothers or sisters, I was only his friend, I therefore repaid his gratitude, I lied for him, for him to come back, I never was a threat to him, and never would have been. I was so happy when boss took him back. I could not thank my mate enough for teaching me basics. By sharing his knowledge I am where i am because of him, sadly he also parted at a young age himself victim to deadly cancer. RIP my friend who was the base of my carrier.

Yeah, that's why we have apprenticeships, jobs for kids straight out of Skool.

That's why career change chancers & course cowboys should be banned from the industry.
Some of the stuff you come away with is firmly based as on your training at the BBC, a solid technical grounding in the Make-Up department luvvie.

If he worked with a firm that did Gas installs, he can then build a portfolio of his Gas work. If he a shovelling shyte Plumber, there's no chance he get that matey.

Me, I've been doing Gas install work since the early 70s. When I started my indentured apprenticeship. Voluntary registered with Corgi, then ACOPs & sat my ACS several times.
My Gas Safe number has only 3 digits....666!!!

He has installed gas pipes, installed complete new boilers (commissioned by the Gas Safe installer) etc.; he can't prove that. He has also done bathrooms, kitchens, plastering, tiling, decorating and a huge number of bogs.

Given they've just extended the portfolio hours, it's advise he gets another job with a better Boss then.
