Hanging pics etc on plasterboard walls

Are there any recommendations for the type of fittings used for hanging pics or more heavier objects such as clocks on plasterboard walls?
 
For hanging larger objects the hollow wall fixings would work as Burnerman suggests. I would recommend the setting tool to save you swearing, its possible to fit without but if you have lots of fittings to fit its probably worth getting the tool.

You may also want to consider a detector to ensure you don't hit a wire.

For smaller elements (light pic frames) I have used the more traditional looking nail in hooks.
 
Thanks guys, can someone please point me in the direction of the setting tool that you have mentioned?
 
Do these setting tools come in different sizes for certain screw sizes, for instance the 7mm that you mentioned

Is there a particular setting tool size I'd need for this?
 
lidl are selling both pack of anchor screws and tool - I purchased the box of anchor screws as i may only need occasionally and so did not bother with the setting tool and screws box
I purchased the other day , so may have sold out now

I wonder which wire detector to go for.
 
I think the setting tools can handle most hollow fixings as the thread is generally 5mm. So long as the setting tool can grip the screw head it will be able to collapse the fitting.
Can't advise on a wire detector I'm afraid, but I wouldn't totally rely on them anyway.....stud detectors are worse!

And these are for use in plasterboard walls, I'll only need the one setting tool.

Re stud detectors, I think just using a small round magnet would probably suffice.

Re the wire detectors, so it's a case of fingers crossed when drilling a hole?

The setting tool is only for use with hollow wall fixings.
As for the cable detectors, bearing in mind that the cables in a wall should be vertical almost all of the time, by all means use one....every little helps to prevent drilling into one!

What’s behind the plasterboard ? Hollow or dot and dab? If latter then disregard all above comments .
