As of today, over 60 countries have legalised some form of medicinal cannabis: since November 2018 that’s also been the case in Britain. Some 30,000 of us have already been prescribed cannabis for conditions ranging from arthritis to epilepsy, anxiety to multiple sclerosis. Experts predict the list will soon grow longer and specialist surgeries are springing up nationwide to cater for ever-growing demand.

About 7 million Germans are estimated to regularly use cannabis. The government has said previously that many users rely on the drug for medicinal reasons and that the new law will also improve the quality of cannabis consumed by growing numbers of young people.
Adults will be permitted to grow up to three plants and possess small amounts of cannabis from 1 April, and three months later it will also be available in licensed not-for-profit clubs established to grow and distribute the cannabis plant. Cannabis consumption for the under-18s will continue to be forbidden.

Police authorities have said that they will have difficulty imposing the rules. But Lauterbach responded by saying the policing of the hidden market had also been difficult.

So, what do you want to do? Carry on ignoring the problem of an unregulated market or make an attempt to excise some regulation and gather tax for the economy...

Countries that have legalized recreational use of cannabis are Canada, Georgia, Germany, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, South Africa, Thailand, and Uruguay, plus 24 states, 3 territories, and the District of Columbia in the United States and the Australian Capital Territory in Australia. Commercial sale of recreational cannabis is legalized nationwide in three countries (Canada, Thailand, and Uruguay) and in all subnational U.S. jurisdictions that have legalized possession except Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Countries that have legalized medical use of cannabis include Albania, Argentina, Australia, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Malawi, Malta, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Panama, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Rwanda, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, San Marino, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Thailand, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, Vanuatu, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Others have more restrictive laws that allow only the use of certain cannabis-derived pharmaceuticals, such as Sativex, Marinol, or Epidiolex. In the United States, 38 states, 4 territories, and the District of Columbia have legalized the medical use of cannabis, but at the federal level its use remains prohibited.

Ongoing medical research will reveal hidden benefits for mental health and relief for some physical conditions, such as glaucoma, and pave the way for a better understanding of how this plant can be used creatively, taking control away from gangs and traffickers.

The US Justice Department’s recommendation on Tuesday that cannabis be classified as a schedule three drug – the same as ketamine and Tylenol with codeine – does not legalise recreational use outright, but opens the way to lighter punishments as well as greater private investment tax benefits for the industry. Shares of Canada’s Canopy Growth Corporation and Cronos Group surged 80.02 percent and 15.71 percent, respectively, while US-based Cronos Group jumped nearly 40 percent.

The move helps narrow a widening gulf between federal law and the legal frameworks in about 40 states where the drug is legal in some form. Biden initiated a review of federal law on marijuana in October 2022 and announced pardons for thousands of Americans convicted for possession.

“Too many lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana. It’s time that we right these wrongs,Biden said in December.

Prohibition of the drug, which was first outlawed at the national level in 1937, has also been blamed for exacerbating racial inequality in the justice system. Black people are 3.6 times more likely than white people to be arrested for marijuana possession despite using the drug at similar rates, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. In a Pew Research Center survey last month, 88 percent of Americans said marijuana should be legal for medical or recreational use.

Here’s another strange and under-studied prospect of psychedelics: a world without severe chronic pain...An estimated 51 million Americans suffer from chronic pain — excruciating conditions like migraines, phantom limb pains, or fibromyalgia — and often go without effective treatments. But psychedelics like psilocybin mushrooms and LSD seem to offer serious relief. Most clinical trials in today’s psychedelic “hype bubble” prioritize mental health conditions, which will likely lead to MDMA being approved by the FDA later this year for PTSD treatment. The downside of that singular focus, however, is that those suffering from chronic pain have been left to turn to the psychedelic underground for support. This may be about to change with the National Institutes of Health’s announcement last month of a nearly $22 million grant for clinical trials on psychedelic-assisted therapy and chronic pain relief.

One condition that’s pulling a ton of attention toward psychedelic treatments for chronic pain is cluster headaches — also known as “suicide headaches.” They’re among the most painful conditions known to humankind. The title of a real study on survey responses from 493 people with cluster headaches begins: “You will eat shoe polish if you think it would help.”

A friend of mine suffers from Exploding Head Syndrome - yeah, i thought of Scanners when i heard of it too, but it's a genuine affliction. They microdose to self-medicate the condition as "doctor's know sh!t and do f.all" to help them get any sleep. Better regulation would help make it easier and safer for them to obtain a regular dose to treat this problem and, most importantly, decriminalise the need to treat such afflictions safely...and legally.

CBD is a refined 'erb with the THC taken out - a decaff drug, if you will. And the use of psychadelics to treat headaches piqued my curiosity since the chemical compound is so close to aspirin, it makes some sort of sense to trial such treatment. I don't imagine it'll ever be available on the NHS but if i suffered from a 'suicide headache' i'd certainly give it a try. I find it hard to sleep with an extraneous sounds around and the idea of trying to count sheep while a madman plays the bongos in my brain is impossible.
