Thanks to all - followed the description above and extra tips and it all worked perfectly, saving at least £100 in the process and getting the job done at a time to suit me! The only thing I would add is to be careful with the wires to the bulbs in the control panel - I found it easier to move the panel out of the way as far as possible and was aware of the cable to the clock/timer thanks to colinregan but inadvertently yanked the bulbs out of their holders in the process. The bulb holders were slightly damaged - everything went back together ok in the end but things were a bit delicate. Now to tackle the washing machine.........
