Iran launches drone attack on Israel

Iron dome has been working overtime the last few days fending off hezbollah in the north.
It is at the moment as well. Wiser pundits are pointing out that they don't know exactly what Iran has launched.

Iran saying that any retaliation will cause an even bigger strike. Also telling the USA to stay out of it.

Looks like stuff has arrived.

Israel can handle this strike very easily. It's really the minimum Iranian response, to save face, after the deliberate provocation. But I wonder whether Netanyahu will let a few through on purpose. Pretty much nothing he could do would surprise me.

No. The iron dome system has already been overwhelmed on a few occasions, 400 rockets a day plus a few from the north can achieve that. UK and USA have shot down over a hundred already, as the Iranian ones approach expect more from the North and South. It's not a minimum response, a minimum response would have been to carry on using Hamas and Hezbollah.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great outcome, it justifies Israel making a direct response on Iran (if they haven't already).

Crack on Israel and wipe the scum off the face of the earth.

Some reports are now saying hundreds of drones, and also cruise missiles and ballistic missiles.

I was basing it on the original report of dozens of drones.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) said it launched the drones and missiles under the operation “True Promise” as part of the punishment for “the Zionist entity’s crime of targeting the Iranian consulate in Syria” on April 1. The attack in Damascus killed seven IRGC members. Daniel Hagari, a spokesman for the Israeli military, said the Iranian salvo consisted of more than “200 killer drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles”, but that the vast majority were shot down outside Israel’s borders, with help from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Syria also put on high alert its Russian-made Pantsir ground-to-air defence systems around the capital Damascus and major bases in the event of an Israeli strike, army sources told the Reuters news agency. A retired Israeli general, Amos Yadlin, told the country’s Channel 12 news that the Iranian drones were equipped with 20 kg (44 pounds) of explosives each.

It's going to be interesting to see how Israel and the US put out all these small fires around the Middle East before they combine to make one big bonfire that'll be a devil of a job to contain.

Here’s a closer look at Israel’s multilayered air-defense system:

The Arrow: This system developed with the U.S. is designed to intercept long-range missiles, including the types of ballistic missiles Iran said it launched on Saturday. The Arrow, which operates outside the atmosphere, has been used in the current war to intercept long-range missiles launched by Houthi militants in Yemen.

David’s Sling: Also developed with the U.S., the David’s Sling is meant to intercept medium-range missiles, such as those possessed by Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Patriot: This American-made system is the oldest member of Israel’s missile-defense system – used during the First Gulf War in 1991 to intercept Scud missiles fired by Iraq’s leader at the time, Saddam Hussein. The Patriot is now used to shoot down aircraft, including drones.

Iron Dome: This system, developed by Israel with U.S. backing, specializes in shooting down short-range rockets. It has intercepted thousands of rockets since it was activated early last decade – including thousands of interceptions during the current war against Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel says it has a success rate of over 90%.

Iron Beam: Israel is developing a new system to intercept incoming threats with laser technology. Israel has said this system will be a game changer because it is much cheaper to operate than existing systems. However, it is not yet operational.

Video footage in the link shows them being shot down as they arrive and they say 99% of them didn't make it through the air defences. (I wish United's defence was half as effective.) Not sure it's in Iran's interest to carry on with more drone attacks but this week will be full of negotiations to prevent an escalation.

Shaeds are cheap. The idea is to use dozens or hundreds. Often the missiles used to shoot them down are more expensive than the drone themselves. Iron dome missiles are twice the price and far harder to build.

No, Israel's invasion of Palestine caused it.
And what caused that invasion?

Damn! I keep forgetting - I'm on your special 'question ignore' list. Quite a few on here are.

One way to end the Gaza war, Isreal will switch effort to Iran.

Iran is playing into Israel's hands, attention is now focused on Iran at the expense of Gaza.
Israel is now the victim of a retaliation which they deliberately provoked.
