English, Scot, Welsh are sort of ethnic terms unlike British which covers anyone living in the British Isles.
English derives from the Anglo Saxon soldier/ migrants who came to Britain,a Scot was Gaelic immigrant from N.Ireland, Welsh was a word used by Anglo Saxons to describe Ancient Britons in Western Britain I think it means foreigner.

I'm English to anyone unless I'm going through A US border. Then I'm British.
