Random bits of wood hammered into mortar

Looks like it is a solid [Old] 9 inch construction, and does not have a cavity?

The thing to look at is that there are rows of "headers" that is a brick that has been laid across two touching leaves of bricks laid in one direction.

One thing to look @ + cost of same would be external insulation + render???

Thank you all for your replies. Very helpful to me. I definitely think I'll have a good go myself at scraping the bad mortar out and repointing it. Might need to set aside a month or 2 for the sheer size of the wall.
 
That erosion of the brick arrises is typical of mortar that is too strong
 
This is a pic to show what I was meaning about there being a different section of brick at the bottom. Luckily the above bricks are in pretty good condition. Just these lower browny bricks have faired badly. Although I plan on doing all the pointing on both types of bricks. Any idea on why there would be 2 types of brick used?
