Replacing a ceiling light fitting

Try countersinking the ply with a large drill 8-10mm manually turning it with your hand? you cant cut an insert the thickness of the ply (or a new piece) so that it will be flush with the ceiling?

OK I just had a light bulb moment. Can you place the unnecessary wires in a small plastic box and push it through the hole, leaving the wires to the light to fill around? Any electrical suppliers will have plastic enclosures all of different shapes and sizes. The box will have to be smaller than the steel one already in the ceiling and you would be advised to use junction block to replace the tape covered connections.

And Turn OFF at the fuse before you start work
