replacing my thermal store and boiler…Help in specifying

hi guys, my current boiler (potterton suprima 80L 2003/4 installation) is causing me grief and a gas engineer has suggested replacing it..
The problem is the hot water fluctuates (heating is fine) i also have a Gledhill systemate 2000 but apparently that is working all fine… Whilst i will try and fix it, we are living with it for the time being.

The gas man gave me a quote on a new system as follows:

Vailllant 924 boiler
120L unvented indirect cylinder

the usual gubbins, power flush, time clock, and an "s plan" system (not sure what that is)

I did mention to him to send across a basic "cost efficient boiler" like an ideal or something cheaper but he hasn't.

so what I'm looking for is a similar system but a cheaper boiler and a cheaper manufacture of 120 or 150L unvented cylinder. Also does it matter what brand cylinder i use?

I did ask him to separate materials cost with labour (i can't afford it all yet so will take out a 0%credit card to pay off the materials cost) but will have enough for his labour.

Any help appreciated!
 
o the actual fault could be a heat exchanger, or a thermistor, or something else, it will be trial and error on his part..
 
Guy sounds like k nob end which is why I'm trying to grow my commercial portfolio and bin domestic off. Too many tards out there.

The boilermate /systemate will have a very high flow rate of hot water. A 120litre unvented cylinder will be depleted very quickly. Id have nothing less than 250litres.

I'm a Worcester man mostly. Tries Vaillant but they're trading too much on past achievement's.

Get a Viessmann 100w compact open vent instead of the Vaillant. Their heat exchangers are more durable than Worcesters or Vailants
 
If the heating is fine then it would indicate the boiler is ok.

Would be wary of what you are being advised.

For what reason has all this been recommended?
 
Sounds like it's your Gledhill Sludgebucket that's the main problem & not your boiler??!!
 
ok so further to this, BG have been out once and have changed the hot water sensor in the store?...didnt work so they will now order a PCB and anything else he can find to order (im on homecare plan)
 
no although they have mentioned that it is difficult to get parts, and if he doesnt fix it today, he wont know what to do...

It was the independent gas fitter who mentioned it

We will also ring the gledhill technical helpline today whilst he is there to see if they can suggest something else
 
I never find anything difficult about a Suprima and see normal parts still available.

A thermal store works best with a high temperature and one which is higher than enables the boiler to operate in the most efficient way.

A normal unvented cylinder would be a good solution.

For the moment I don't advise replacement of a Suprima as I find them totally repairable if not corroded.

ok so BG came friday and replaced the following:

PCB
2 sensors
grundfos pump (the middle one for those that know it)

seemed to workwhen he was there and yesterday afternoon however i went in the shower today and whilst the hot water wasnt fluctuating, it was not warm enough for a shower, good enough to wash your hands face but too cold for the body

he did mention that if if didnt work there could be a blockage somewhere? he was also on the line to gledhill who couldnt think of anything else and pointed him in the direction of a blockage

nothing has been done to the boiler since the issue started

thoughts anyone?
 
Rip the lot out & fit a combi.
A 35KW combi will give you all you'll ever need.
 
Two thoughts;

- I assume BG will come back till they've got it right?

- Never heard of a Vaillant 924
 
I know someone with a Gledhill Systemate, it was fitted into the house from new. He swears by it. He said the average plumber knows sweet FA about the Gledhills, so beware! Get it fixed. Expensively ripping out something that only needs some repair is a real stupid idea. Beware of so-called 'professional' advice. The man here who recommended the high performance combi has a point. If the boiler is kaput then ripping the lot out a going for a high performance combi boiler has its advantages. They can really deliver lots of hot water.

Great advice???!!! Just wait until the 'sludge bucket' starts to leak, which it will, & floods the gaff!!
