Diagonal shear is the concern with bearings and not vertical cracks - which are not created by the beam in the first place.

I have no idea how they were created, but don't see why you would use 2 pieces on 1 when the other packers cover the beam in one, horizontally at least

Will see what the SE says on Thursday.

SE advised to replace all packing with steel

Got 4 done, just the tricky ones left with no easy way to prop
