Shower Pumps Keep Failing

Ok thanks Just Pumps and dilaio - I really appreciate your help on this. I'll get some pics and post up here tomorrow, and also do a diagram of location of shower etc. Thanks again, D

The pump has now be used 5-6 times, and has stopped hunting - like last time. However, I still dont know the last pump failed after 5 months and the previous ones needed the shower head put on the floor after a couple of years? Any ideas please? Just Pumps? dilalio?

The wall to the left with the towel rail is the one between the bathroom and the airing cupboard. I dont know where the pipes go which go into the wall from the airing cupboard, and the pipe tracker cant find them due to all the other stuff there. My concern is that the previous shower, before major works, was where the towel rail is, and the joists run in the wrong direction - so if the pipes have been run from the previous shower to the new shower and given even more 90 degree bends, is this where the problem lies with the massive drop in flow (as above) from the pump (of) to the shower head and therfore hindering the pump? Help.....??!? Please...

Hi @GrandDen - we are sorry to hear you're having issues with your pump. Thanks Salamander Pumps, appreciated. The hunting doesnt happen any more, thanks - and I suspect that there was a small pocket(s) of air between the pump and the shower head, which gets cleared with use. The main issue with the pumps has been the non-universal ones needing the shower head put on the floor to start after a year or two's use - and then the universal pump failing after 5 months. I have spoken to one of your people, very helpful, and it was deemed that the last pump was defective. The issue I have been trying to determine is what could be causing the repeated problems with the previous non-universal pumps and the loss of pressure coming out of the pump (off) versus coming out of the shower head, but no one seems to know and nor if this is related to the pump issues. The new universal pump is working at the moment, was fitted exactly to spec (as previous ones) re procedure, input temp etc - but I am trying to determine if there is anything else (thermostat cartridge in shower, multiple bends etc) which will cause another problem in the future....
 
Is the cold feed into the pump fed from the cold water storage header tank on separate feed to the hot water tank?

How big is the cold water header tank?
 
Hi Lower, the cold water feed is direct from the cold water tank, the hot feed is direct from the hot water tank; yes its a twin ct60BU. The cold water tank is very large, bigger than the minimum spec. What would cause the issues please?
 
On the cold water tank the outlet to pump should be opposite end from the inlet to tank, is yours?

Is it a separate pipe from the header tank to the hot water tank, or is it a single feed from the tank, one side teed off to the hot water tank?

Tank size question is related to whether the tank is being emptied by the pump and therefore sucking in air.
 
Hi Lower, no, it is just a single feed to the tank, no extra tees. The only tee is for the wot water, with a vertical pipe sticking up about 2' with a ?stuck? valve which looks like it used to leak. Presumably for bleeding this - but nothing to do with shower piping?

And the tank is very large (I used to work at Airfix in the wharehouse and ship the tanks), probably doubl normal size.
 
UPDATE: I have given up for the moment trying to find out why the previous pumps failed... BUT THE HUNTING IS BACK. After use, it hunts over the next hour or so every 5-10 minutes, then hunts maybe 4 times over the next 24 hours. As I cant access them, I assume its a problem, possibly air, in the pipes between the pump and the shower. I have seen on another forum, advice to fit Non Return Valves on these pipes - doe sthis make sense? If so, what are the bes ones to get for 15mm pipes please? Any ideas?
