Surely this wire isn't live, right?

Well it pinged on every known live wire I tested it on so it seems to be more or less accurate. Doesn't answer the question of where the known live wires go when they disappear through the ceiling below however...

It’s a shame that when a house is constructed the builder doesn’t provide drawings showing where all the cabling and plumbing is routed.

It probably did have that originally but after 70 odd years of remodeling the records are no longer accurate.

I would somewhat doubt even that. There may well have been detailed 'structural' plans at the time, but I don't think I've ever seen ('historical') plans of domestic properties that included detailed plans of the wiring, and not necessarily even the plumbing (although 'drainage' often included.

The situation may be different in terms of new-builds in more recent times.

I personally do my best to create and maintain reasonably up-to-date plans of the (extensive and complex!) wiring and plumbing systems in my large house - mainly for my own benefit !

So do I, just a general plan of the internal utilities, but a more detailed plan of the external utilities, detailed at the time they were originally installed.

My documenting of pre-existing stuff has obviously evolved gradually as I have discovered it and/or 'worked it out' (and probably is still incomplete, even after several decades!), but I have certainly tried to maintain fairly good documentation of everything I have changed or added over the past 35 or so years.

I would probably like to say that I do so for the benefit of any future occupiers of the house, but the truth is more selfish than that, since I often need to try to get to the bottom of some of it ;)
