system freezing

Eddie - what I meant to say was I haven't added any software/hardware that has demonstrably caused or contributed to the problem. The system was randomly locking up long before I installed SP2 - actually, I was hoping that by installing it I might also help sort out the problem . It's no better or worse for SP2, or an upgrade to Norton Internet Security I installed a while ago.
All device drivers are up-to-date, all current Windows updates in place.

don't go spending any cash the now

How big is you hard drive
if about 40 to 80g i would down load partion magic and install

then run partion magic and free up about 5g partition for a fresh install

make a new install on 5g partition then run for couple of days and see how you get on on new install, (if freezes its hardware related) if not froze its software and have to do a big fresh install

Thanks for all the advice. Turns out that the hard disk is failing (limping along right now, but just a matter of time ...), so I've decided to bite the bullet and buy a new tower after all. Early Christmas present ...
