That's Torn It!

If you check 'manually' install updates, you can wait for the WGA update to appear and don't donwload it. This it's number KB9050.

I don't live in a cave. Its only in Cornwall they do that.
You don't seem to like it if others know more about the subject than you.

You are but a novice compared to some and mislead people who ask for help on here.

Come on Monkey

Come on Monkey

I don't like it when people think they know more about a subject than I do.

I also don't like it when silly little city boys like you make snide comments.

Unless you're going to actually say something relevant and on-topic, leave.

Hmm. Think I'll look up a second-hand copy on Ebay.

No such thing, once an XP license has been activated it dies with that machine and is not transferable, this would be the case for a "retail OEM" version

Providing the code given with the disk has not been used then why not go for it!!

Incorrect.

Worse case you have to tap a few numbers into the phone keypad to say you've changed the motherboard.

As I said, ms don't care about xp anymore, you used to have to speak to them if you had reached the activation limit, or the hardware had changed. Now it's all done by recorded message.

I used a customers oem xp pro from the bottom of their 5 year old laptop to install on a new pc build, activated with no problems.

I stand corrected, imo there really is no need to go out and buy one

I wouldn't buy one either. There are several ways of getting these things, including by torrent download. Now I'm not telling anyone to steal anything, I'm just saying that if MS no longer care about XP then why not check a site like TPB for the activation key you require?

I was under the impression that an EU directive permitted the transfer of an operating system licence from a "dead" machine to a new or rebuilt one. M$ do not make a point of publicising it, probably because it does not apply in the US. I have replaced motherboards in OEM machines which originally had VLK installs, and *the code on the machine case* (not the VLK with which the OS was installed with) has always activated correctly and "passed" WGA.
