Would 290mm x 45mm do the job?

As long as its a relatively lightweight roof, don't forget to crown the beam before fitting.

I'm putting up a freestanding patio (5 x 2.6m) with insulated roof panels on top. I've got 6 post footings at the moment but wanted to eliminate the middle 2 posts and just have 4 posts.

^ did anyone read that important bit of information?

You could bring your posts in say 500mm that would give you a span of 4m rather than 5m for the beam to deal with load wise.
