said the signal was too strong and had to point the aerial slightly away from the transmitter

As Lucid has mentioned an attenuator is the best option when the signal is too strong, pointing the aerial ( antenna ) away from the TX site can create more problems as the signal fed to the TV may then be a multi-path signal
