I think so!

I feel that all the musicians of the day conspired between themselves to put silly lyrics into many of their songs!

From Duran Duran's "cherry ice cream smile" to ABC's "can't complain, mustn't grumble, help yourself to another piece of apple crumble".

From Toto's Kilimanjaro/ Serengeti line (they are nowhere near each other) to Van Halen's "Only time will tell if we stand the test of time”

Gary Kemp's "Seaside arms".

XTC's "Trying to taste the difference 'tween a lemon and a lime".

There's a bit of a food theme going on here!

I could go on and on....

Were lyrics in other decade's songs as bad?

The lyrics by Peter Gabriel often contain a mad poetry, like these in 'Lay your hands on me':

Working in gardens, thornless roses, fat men play with their garden hoses/ Poolside laughter has a cynical bite, sausage speared by the cocktail satellite/I walk away from from light and sound, down stairways leading underground...

The 90's had some mad ones too, how about Des'ree's song 'Life',

I don't want to see a ghost
It's a sight that I fear most
I'd rather have a piece of toast
And watch the evening news

It’s still a good tune though

Some classic songs like Paranoid and Smoke on the Water have pretty bland lyrics but the opening line of a great song makes it memorable.
