Apparently Maxwells liabilities were always greater than his assets.

Watching the weatherman at an allotment telling us how dry it's been. Don't I know it. Rain. We need rain!
Tried a rain dance around a bonfire a couple of days ago but to no avail. It's the devil's own task to dig in this ground; hard as rock - had to usea third of my winter rainwater (about 100 litres) just to feed the trees this week. Even the rain due this weekend will fall over the Highlands where it's bug all use to anyone. Reckon it'll be the driest April on record but at least it's an improvement on last year when those damn frosts ruined my apple trees.
I watched the prog on rebuilding Notre Dame last night, with 'the History Pixie' Lucy Worsley. It was interesting to see the way medieval builders solved difficult technical problems using recycled iron and limestone. Discovering the rose window had been reinforced and rotated 15 degrees in the 1840s was a real eye opener. The revelation that the cathedral had been used as a warehouse after the Revolution blew my mind...how big a philistine do you have to be in order to do something like that!
They're back on the allotment again. It's in Redbridge. Bloke's saying they have no running water so they are having it tough but he let slip they have some community tanks that they fill from a 'local stream'. That'll be the river Roding then. I suppose we are lucky in that we have running water on our site so we never suffer in the dry spells. Just as well as I have a couple of barrels that I collect rainwater in but it doesn't last long - a whole winters worth is almost gone in one watering.
Years ago my dad had a well on his allotment. I was about 6 years old and I hid while he and my mum were doing some work on it. They called out for me but I stayed hidden. Then my mum saw our dog sitting and looking down the well (probably saw a frog or something), gave out an enormous scream and my dad, thinking I was in the well, rushed over and was hanging over the side of the well upside down being held by his legs by my mum groping around in the well. It was then that I decided to come out of hiding to get....a hiding!

Respected opinion is that the greatest ever invention of mankind has been sewerage systems. 2nd place is debatable but I'd give 'crop irrigation' a strong case.
They say that the sewerage system has saved millions of lives. It's certainly saved mine on a few occasions!

Just watched the last instalment of Pilgrimage, did not enjoy this series as much as the previous ones, still food for thought though
I tell you what I missed last night. The man with a penis on his arm! Apparently, while homeless and using drugs, it turned black and fell off into the toilet due to blood poisoning. They saved it but to keep it 'alive' it was grafted on to his arm. It stayed there for six years until it could be grafted back on. I'll have to try and watch it on catchup.
