What have you been doing today?

On my way home from the Olympic city. Chokka over here - lots of co people wearing American football tops so there must be a game on over there. Lots of people wearing Philadelphia strips. Went in Waitrose in Westfield to get my lunch. Saw a couple of shoplifters literally scooping the cooked meats - hams, smoked salmon etc into big bags. I grassed them up to the security guard and with assistance, they wrestled the bags off of them but let them go! I got the thumbs up from them as they were loading the stock back on the shelves.

Scavenging! Walking home from the station, I noticed three piles of used patio stones along the side of someone’s house. The homeowner was bringing them out. I asked if they were being thrown away and he said he was going to put them on Facebook and offer them for free. I said I’d have them for my allotment and he told me to help myself. I went home, got the Golf and went back to pick them up. 66 of them in total. I did it in two trips to the allotment with the Golf sitting like a dog wiping its arse! He said he is taking more up next week and I can take them too if I wanted. All 5 paths on my plot are now almost fully paved as well as having a patio area around my shed and my greenhouse.

Saved a baby Jackdaw from the dogs and placed it up in a tree out of harms way. Parents were making a right song and dance about it!

Did a bit more piddling about in the kitchen. Cut a couple of wall unit end panels to take a flyover shelf and go around the quartz splashback and fitted one pelmet. Taking my time with these fiddly bits. - measuring several times and cutting once - don’t want to make the same fùck up I did with the plinths!

Mrs Mottie is going out to Spain for a few days with her mates so I went online to add our medical conditions to travel insurance that comes with our bank account. For my high cholesterol, raised blood pressure and watch and wait prostrate, they wanted an extra £110 and for Mrs Motties mild asthma they wanted £30 so £140 in all to add those conditions to the policy. Sod that, I bought her a single trip insurance policy for 5 days for less than a tenner. We might be going on a cruise next month anyway so I’ll check again and compare that to another single trip policy.

Our family travel insurance for just over 3 weeks for 3 people to NZ was the best part of 700 quid!

But I do have a list of conditions longer than my arm!

I sometimes get told by Mrs S that I'm a bit of a Yorkshireman...I did live there for 6 years! Maybe £700 isn't that much for the insurance, but I thought it was a lot.

A trip, on the bus, to our local town, to restock up from Iceland, using their 10% discount on a Tuesday, for the over 60's, taking advantage of their free delivery as well, if you spend >£20. We actually spent £35, and was told delivery would be 12:30 to 14:30 - The bus driver on the way home, must have been new, driving very slowly and carefully, even so we would have just made home for 12:30, except the Iceland driver rang at 12:25, to say he was at our door, with our delivery, so Avril had to sprint the 100yards home, from the bus stop.

This evening, we progressed the workshop garage french drain, a bit further. Just the final bit of that to complete, Then we crack on with 'phase II'.

I think so. The dogs often find baby jackdaws in that area this time of the year. Here’s a better picture of one from a few years ago.

i remember that one: totally freaked out by dogs.
A pair have decided to roost in the chimney pot, this year. I don't mind but draw the line at them pecking at apples in the old tree when they ripen, and with midsummer only ten days away The Gathering will flock around the Oak in the lower field soon. Far too many to count and some of 'em will be eyeing up my apples. Bloody thieves!

Well that was much easier than anticipated....

We had a bit of a struggle completing phase I, but phase II, which was expected to need a few days of effort, was completed with ease, today. We were expecting to have to dig the existing french drain pipe, much deeper than it was, but instead found what I must have done decades ago was lay a deep pipe, with a much shallower pipe on top of it. All that was needed, was that upper pipe removed, gravel cleared, and replaced, and the existing pipe cleaned out of mud.

I didn't have a grafter spade/ditch spade, though a few normal spades - looking online, all I could find were much wider grafters, than the very narrow 3" wide one I needed, so this morning's first job, was to try to modify an ordinary spade - using a 3" wide section of cart spring from my scrap pile, welded onto one of the spades existing blade. This, in anticipation of the need, for phase II. It worked rather well, but turned out to be completely unnecessary.

All that is left now, is to tidy up the drive, that runs alongside my garage, maybe fill in a few gaps, where concrete has been damaged.
