What is the worth of a good torch for soldering pipe

I think you mean basic science cracks you up.

No you get science confused with practicality. You cannot resist writing SOMETHING, regardless of its value. If the lamp works on a short piece of pipe, and it demonstrably does, it will work on a long one. Those of us who have actually done work, will have used a "proper" lamp but on a soft setting, often to avoid scorching. I have done this on some VERY long pipes, without struggling :)

I got a package that includes the attachable heat guard which looks handy
it isnt really a heat guard as such, you will still need to protect the close area from heat with a scorch mat or something, that attachment is to reflect the flame so you get more even heat distribution when soldering larger diameter pipes

Just to make it clear, if someone is going to the effort of a major chunk of pipework, then he should buy a proper torch, as he has.
It is just that Bernies rantings tend to boil my pis$.

yet he can fit a boiler with a gas lighter so what do you know

Soldering a short length of scrap pipe will require less heat than soldering a long pipe. The long pipe will conduct far more heat away from the joint than a short length will
Basic physics lesson, but have you ever soldered a joint?
