When is this going to stop?

Yep; down to the owners.

(as in "why the fudge would you leave your baby, unattended but for a dog?")

Jeezus wept: I can scarcely believe this had to be spelled out for you.
It wasn't the owners who killed the baby.

Why no lovely pictures of the dog with the caption - "he would never hurt a flie".

If you buy an animal with big sharp teeth, evolved to tear flesh apart, and leave it in a room with a creature that is the perfect sized prey, then you are responsible for the creature's death.

I'm a dog owner, and I only have a small dog, who wouldn't say boo to a goose. but I wouldn't leave him in a room with a baby, in much the same way that I wouldn't leave him in a room with my steak and chips!

Some input off mottie would be appreciated.
Having owned a cocker spaniel many moons ago I found mine to be easy to be trained and obedient after puppy stage.
Never having the opportunity to put it to test round my children ill never know whether I would have trusted it to be left alone with my children but it always gave the impression it could be trusted.
