is it a repetition since the start of the new round, i.e. from the last 'winning word', or a repetition ever, in the thread?

Only per-round.

But it would add some additional spice and worth participating. As it is now, it's almost pointless.

I'm inclined to agree.

Nothing wrong with modifying a plan as real-life experience shows up problems.
