New Forum Help Emojis

Started off in Japan BAS (hence the name) and allegedly gained popularity. That's probably why Apple started including them.

I think they have them on Android now too.

Yet another load of bollo**s.

I have been using symbols like :) since I first got a computer connected to the internet.
Back on the days of BBS's that ran at 300 baud or 1200 if it was fast.
All these things are is progression - they are replaced by images instead of staying as text.

So often emotion is not transferred in someones post, these do help.

I still call them emoticons. :D
Not smilies?

The site still calls them that...

Google hits when searching for:

smilies - 115M
emoticons - 25.4M
emojis - 11M

Boring :sleep::sleep::sleep:

Is anyone from the site going to answer my question(n)

Although widely (mis)used to refer to emoticons in general, dictionary definitions generally give the seemingly common sense definition of the word "smiley" as being a type/subset (albeit the most commonly used type) of emoticon - not surprisingly relating to those emoticons which indicate smiling!! It is really a bit odd to describe things like :eek: as "smilies"!

Kind Regards, John

Methinks we have.

They are not installed on the forum software so not part of any posts.

When did they become "emojis" anyway, and why? How?

2011 on Apple stuff
Why??

BAS - you asked the question.

AFAIK, emojis originated in Japan and became popular. Apple added them to attract Japanese customers.

Popularity in Japan prompted Apple to add them. Nothing to do with Apple's heritage.

They subsequently gained popularity further afield.

Do you know differently?

Those are nice smileys (or emoticons if you like)

What's your point?

Before replying, bear in mind you asked specifically about 'emojis'

Precisely. Or 'emojis' - it's just an evolutionary expansion.

My point is that they did not start off in Japan.

The use of smiley-face images in advertising and promotional material etc dates back over half a century, but the use of

in text message boards was started in the USA.

Smilies became emoticions became emojis.

If someone in another country adds sounds to them (god forbid) and gives them another new name they will still have started off in text message boards in the USA in the 1980s.
