New Forum Help Emojis

I beg to differ BAS.

You asked about emojis.

I agree that smileys [emoticons if you like] were in general usage from the 1980s but the term 'emoji' (a Japanese word) has a specific and separate history. These emojis were originally only available in Japan and, whilst one of these was a smiley face, there were a great many emojis which had no equivalent outside Japan. These emojis (specific term) became popular outside Japan hence why they began to be coded into other systems (notably Apple and Android) In fact, Apple attributes its later inclusion of emojis to an attempt to woo Japanese teenagers to their products.

I never claimed that the smiley originated in Japan. You asked specifically about emojis which, as I say, is a distinct and separate term. Whether the term becomes synonomous with smileys/emoticons remains to be seen.

The fact remains that emojis started in Japan therefore your assertion, 'No they didn't' is factually incorrect.
