Harder to own your first home under the Tories

We all bought doer upper houses that needed completely modernising and did it all ourselves. Of course in those days there were no latest mobile phones to own, no gym memberships, no Netflix/Prime/Apple TV subscriptions, no new cars each on lease - one old banger between the pair of us that we washed ourselves, no just eat/uber eats/deliveroos, no internet with Facebook/instagram influencers telling us what we should have, stag nights were just that - a night at a local pub and not a week away in a foreign country, our weddings were in a church with a 'do' in a local community centre and not a celebrity style wedding in a castle or another country, one U.K. based caravan or holiday camp holiday a year, no Costa coffee on the way to work, home made sandwiches for lunch. In fact, none of the usual money wasting distractions that todays potential first time buyers succumb to.
Sorry to rain on your journey to Narnia, in 1987 the earnings to house price ratio was 3 nationally and 3.7 in London, today its 5.2 nationally and 10.97 in London. There are rose tinted glasses out there but yours need wiping.

The house buying situation has changed for the worse, though. It's not about there being temptations to spend your money elsewhere. Even if you don't spend money on stuff like that, it is nigh-on impossible to get the funds together. Compare wages, mortgage rates, house prices etc from the 60s/ 70s/ 80s to those of today and you'll see what I mean.
These modern kids. Just need to work harder

The Greens are reaching out to renters with a huge election commitment on new and environmentally-friendly housing, including a plan to let councils requisition empty properties or ones without proper insulation. Among other housing commitments in the party’s manifesto being launched today is a proposed £49bn investment programme over the next five years to insulate homes and public buildings, and to fit properties with heat pumps... the party is also setting out plans for a wealth tax and other levies targeting wealthier people, which it says could raise at least £50bn a year to help public services.

“Young people, in particular, know just how broken Britain’s frontline services are. The economy is not working for them. They have been priced out of the housing market and are struggling to fund their education. Now is the moment to be ambitious. Not unrealistic, but ambitious.”

Not that it'll make much difference as they have no hope of making ground on the main parties but in focussing on key areas where support is strong (Brighton and Bristol) there's hope at least one frog can hop in the Westminster pond to maintain a voice on environmental issues as Labour and the Tories try to ignore the Climate Crisis that affects us all.

Ah, I see. Just like those that profess not to read the 'wail' can suddenly produce an article from the wail when it suits.
So are you saying you don't believe him and its no harder to buy a house now than it was?

Look around you, could you buy the same type of house that you 1st bought on the type of wage that you would now earn at the same age?

Oh and his article wasn't from the wail, it's on all news sources. It's factual

I'll say this again as I have in other threads. Regardless of anyone's personal views on immigration, one thing is guaranteed. Globally, over the coming years/decades, we are going to see a LOT more movement of people.

Climate change will create far bigger movement of people than our excursions into the middle east and afganistan

Thatcher started off with RTB

Agree, the money raised should have been invested in new social housing for indigenous, working Brits and ex services.

Her instincts were right. At least she didn't ever open the floodgates and let the rest of the world in. RTB was aimed at indigenous Brits with a record of responsible council house tenancy.

You're parroting the same old predictable, lefty drivel that you've been programmed to do.

The sins of the fathers should never be visited on the sons.:idea::idea::idea::idea::idea:
I'm parroting nowt thanks ;)

Over centuries Britain thought nothing of taking over countries and instilling its societal values.

Maybe Britain itself is now gradually being taken over? I'm not imparting any view on whether this would be right or wrong, I'm simply making the assertion maybe that's what's happening. And if it is, I'm sure many people around the world might be thinking 'karma.'
