In the 2017 BBC documentary 'Dementia, Football and Me' he revealed that he was suffering from dementia and said he was "brain-damaged from heading balls".

I remember when Cardiff played QPR back in the seventies and Stan Bowles wife had just left him, it was in the papers saying that he didn't know where she'd gone. The Cardiff fans were singing to Stan "Stanley, Stanley where's your wife?" and Stan turned and faced them, shrugged his shoulders and said "I don't f*cking know", crowd all laughed and gave him a big cheer. RIP Stan, a great character.
