Hello all you book people. :) :) :) I could post this in Computer Hardware but I'm thinking I'm more likely to find a kindle expert here.

Our other half got a kindle for her birthday. Well I didn't know a lot about them, except that you had to get the books from Amazon, but our son told me that there were lots of free ones. :o :o :o So I looked on Amazon, found loads of free books and started downloading anything remotely interesting onto our computer, ready to be transferred to the kindle. In due course, I connected the kindle and copied the books onto it. So far so good. 8) 8) 8)

Later on, I noticed that you can also transfer books directly from Amazon onto the kindle and you don't even have to be on your home computer to do it - so I 'bought' several more. Sure enough, when I got home and switched on the kindle, there they all were. :D :D :D

But now I've been thinking. :? :? :? In order to get those books, the kindle must have gone out onto the internet to download them from Amazon all by itself. Does this not constitute a hole in our network security. :!: :!: :!:

The other consequence of doing it that way was that I don't have copies of those books on the computer - which means that I can't back them up.   Is there a way to copy them from the kindle onto the computer or do I have to delete them all and 'buy' them again?

Which brings me to my final question: Having actually read a kindle book myself, I decided to post a review on Amazon and I gave it a good review, partly on the grounds that it was free. But, when I went to make a final check on the details, I found that it wasn't free anymore.   Was this just 'one of those things' where something that used to be free suddenly costs money? Or do the free books change all the time like special offers in a supermarket? :? :? :?

Sorry for the long post. All answers gratefully received. :) :) :)

Edit: Duplicate paragraphs removed.

...that post was so good SC I read it twice :)

The only thing I can say is its the same with the ipad ...once they are on there you can't get them on to your computer.

Regarding network security I am sure that it is no more compromised that it is by any other wireless device in your home laptop, phones etc.

Last question ...no doubt Amazon run the occasional freebies and change that as and when they choose.

Yes some kindle users occasionally venture here and did discuss a similar matter and 'file sharing' but whether they are still on his planet is another question, and whether they are likely to venture back here is probably an even more perplexing question.

But there you go.... that is life..... my legacy to DIYnot will be this apparently totally disinteresting thread....
will I lose sleep over it nooooooooooooo I have a wonderful rich full life, filled with love, laughter, happiness. and the people I love ..what more could I want :) :)

Oops! A bit of careless copy and paste I think.

Thanks for the quick reply. Maybe I'll post it in Computer hardware after all. :) :) :)

I posted in the Hardware forum and got some expert advice so I thought I'd pass it on --

1) Yes, a kindle can go out on the internet all by itself and connect to Amazon's website - but only if you leave its wireless adapter turned on.

2) It isn't doing anything more than your PC does if you set it to automatically find updates from Microsoft - which most people do.

3) Turning wireless off is a good idea anyway because it drains the battery. You should only turn it on when you know you want to download books.

In each case, you're relying on the website at the other end (Amazon or Microsoft) to not plant anything nasty on the kindle or PC. Mind you, Microsoft have been accused of doing just that in the past.   I suppose, in a worst case example, Amazon might plant something on your kindle that makes it buy books you didn't want    but I reckon their reputation is worth more than a few bogus book sales.

I also found out that you can copy books in both directions between the kindle and your PC. You can also read them on the PC if you install the free reader that you can get from Amazon. I've found that very useful.

As for free books suddenly not being free anymore, I've concluded that the best plan is simple: Grab them while you can. :) :) :)

There are other ways of getting free books.Because they are so small they can be e-mailed as attachments.

I was wondering about that. :? :? :? My understanding is that each book is 'tagged' in some way so that it'll only work on a specific kindle. :( :( :( But what about reading them on the computer? I didn't have to give Amazon any details about the computer. In fact, as far as they're concerned, I might not even have one! I just downloaded the free reader software, stuck it on and it worked. :o :o :o

I think I'll try installing the same software on our laptop then I'll copy the book files across the home network and see what happens. :) :) :)

Ways and means around that.

Why am I not surprized? So Amazon haven't learnt anything from the music/video industry.   As I think I said once before (though maybe in a different forum), once information is released, whether on the internet or over the airwaves or even in print, any attempt to control its eventual use is fatally flawed from the outset. 8) 8) 8)

All three books have just turned up in our house; bought on special offer apparently. 8) 8) 8) The thing is though, they're rather thick and I'm no great fan of fiction (the Never Ending Story pretty well sums up my level of literary interest). I really don't want to have to plough through page after page of boring drivel in the hope of finding something I don't know already. :( :( :( So, if anybody is planning to read all three books right through, could you please post the relevant page numbers? I'll be watching this thread. :) :) :)
