Post Office Scandal

Who do you prosecute and what charge?
being a f*wit at SQL is not a crime

there may be a damages claim - but I can't see who would be criminally accountable?

That would be up to an inquiry to determine, could be a case for criminal negligence.
This debacle dragged on for years, if the post office had put its hands up sooner a lot of suffering could have been avoided.

One reads often of disgruntled employees in the US turning up with an assault rifle and taking retribution...

You can never condone such actions, but you could maybe understand it when the state/corporates totally screws you over and then rewards the perps as if nothing had ever happened...

Thankfully people in the UK don't have routine access to firearms!

Woman on news this morning saying that herself and others are hoping to have charges quashed today.

About time.

But even if they are, they have to battle on for compensation which could easily take a year or more.

She said that the PO told her she was the only one who was having trouble with the system. She said that as social media wasn't as developed or subscribed to, it was not easy to find out if others were having issues, but searching the internet brought other cases to light and then she knew the PO were lying to her.

She told how she reported a shortfall of £2000 to the PO and a technical guy came out to her and looked at the system. Somehow the £2K doubled to £4K. The PO geezer scratched his head and said it would come out in the wash. It didnt. She put her own money in to try and zero the deficit, but it carried on getting bigger. Next thing she knew, the PO were accusing her of theft.

She said she was extremely lucky as her whole village turned up.in court in support of her and this was why the judge did not jail her, but others were shunned by their customers. Some took out loans to pay off their "shortfalls", others sold their properties.
Fujitsu and the PO should face severe consequences over this. It's an absolute disgrace, to say nothing of the poor people who killed themselves over it.

How can it be that the Postmasters get jailed for "stealing", but when it is proved that the PO system is flawed, effectively stealing money from the Postmasters, nothing happens to Fujitsu or the PO.

The whole thing stinks.

Just caught the tail end of the report on the news and I think it said that as it’s been such a long time since it happened, they are not going to look into it any further. Disgraceful when you think of what people have been through.

Said on the radio that the government may need to bail out the PO due to further significant compensation claims ???
From those who were falsely accused

How does that work then?

The PO can't afford to repay money it shouldn't have had in the first place?

It was a rhetorical question.

I was just being sarcastic.

They ought to be able to pay the money back to the people who paid it into their coffers when they didn't owe it. They should not go whining to the Govt for help.

think it may be the the potential massive compensation claims ?

Imagine you sold your house to pay off these fictitious debts? Along with all the costs involved, both monetary and otherwise.

Now compare that to the situation you would have been in if the PO systems weren't bent.

IE....house not sold, accruing value, no moving costs, no stress, mental health issues etc...

The CEO (Paula Vennells) and other executives kept on getting massive bonuses throughout.

The CEO even got a CBE (for services to the PO), and is now Chair at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
(let's hope she's not involved in choosing any IT projects there!)

There will probably be a lengthy inquiry with a few hand picked 'officials' (with their heads in the trough) who will come up with a pre-ordained version of events and no heads will roll.

It also helps the upcoming 'whitewash' that the former CEO has also been appointed as a 'Non-Executive Board Member for the Cabinet Office'!
It's funny how the higher up you are, the more failure seems to be rewarded.
