I do wish they would leve the bloody colours alone, I was working on an old conduit installation a while ago, the earth was provided by the conduit, and the lighting was wired with red as switchfeeds, blue as switchwires, white for the 2 way strappers and black for the neutral (as expected). So a fitting would have a blue for live and two black for neutrals, I needed to pull some neutrals back and pull a new leg back, with the result that the fitting would have ended up with neutrals as blue/black and line as blue. ended up renewing the switchwire to brown as well as it would have been rather silly otherwise!

Yep been there. We made changes to 3ph lighting and ended up with all sorts of silly combinations. All black, all blue, blue/black, black/blue. etc I would have preferred to change the lot and it would have probably been quicker but the powers that be said no. I'd hate to go into a job like that. I truly believe that in these situations we should be able to do new work in existing colours. It would be much easier and possibly safer.

I thought that it was in fact permissible to use old colours if that's what is existing. I was given a few rolls of 'new' red & black a while ago. Can't see me just weighing it in.
There appear to be differing views on this, I still use as many colours as I can when I'm running multiple circuits [like stage lighting], typically 6 way bars may be brn, blk, gry, red, yell, white lives but they would have identifying markers [numbers/letters] and 6 blue neutrals
As I understand BS7671, if conductors are identified by numbers/letters, then it doesn't matter what colour they are, so long as green and G/Y are not used for live conductors (and even G/Y in multi-core cables might be acceptable, if identified by numbers/letters).
