What's going on here?

Su you have replaced a fluorescent which gave a nice even light with 3 spots which are anything but even?
And in any case, you could not pay me to put a fluorescent light fitting anywhere in my house (besides loft & garage space)
Which just goes to show you can't please all of the people all of the time!

Personally, I don't like spotlight bars in a kitchen. We have one in our kitchen now which was there when we moved into this new house earlier in the year, and it's on my "to do" list of changes. Worse yet, when we arrived it was fitted with four CFL spotlights which took about 4 to 5 minutes to get up to full brightness from cold. My preference for kitchen fluoros is the type with multiple tubes behind a single flat diffuser, either surface mount in a frame or flush into the ceiling. The latter can be pretty effective with multiple such units set across the ceiling, and very good at providing even work light.
