Woke act comes in to force in Scotland

We do not have similar laws in England and Wales.

In England and Wales a person is free to be prejudiced against Jews and transgender for example without these being counted as aggravating factors should they be accused of a public order offence.

There is a big difference between having hate as a motive and simply being prejudiced.

Our already stretched police service will have even more dubious stuff to investigate ... great plan.

So far to date Scottish plod have had 3000 complaints / reports of hate crime since it became law

I don't think it's an exaggeration to assert this sort of legislation is the thin edge of a much more concerning wedge in terms of being able to speak freely.

And who defines what a 'reasonable' person is???

You could be in a public space having a discussion with mates and say 'tbh I can't stand x people' with x being whoever is being discussed. There could be a 'reasonable' person within earshot who thinks 'MMmmm, that comment wasn't reasonable and could stir up hate' so they call the police?!?

Fine, 9/10 no action might be taken, however the whole ethos behind this legislation is dangerous.

And PLEASE, don't anyone say 'but if you stay within the rules you have nothing to fear' that is one of thee scariest stances to take for a whole lot of reasons!
You can, always have, and will be able, to speak freely.

Free speech comes at a price, responsibility.

Or do you mean you want unlimited free speech, with no limits ?

Humza Yousless reported under his new law.
Police Scotland has received more than 3,000 hate crime reports since a new law was introduced on Monday, the BBC understands.
It creates a new crime of "stirring up hatred" over protected characteristics.
A large number were about a 2020 speech by First Minister Humza Yousaf - then justice secretary - highlighting white people in prominent public roles.

We don't have 100% free speech in the true sense of the phrase, or rather we do however there are (quite rightly) laws in place to keep us in check.

We don't need further legislation in my opinion.

Little by little, hard fought for freedoms are at risk of being eroded.

We are truly living in a time of the emperor's new clothes if that's the correct phrase to use. e.g. men lining up against women in a race or on a playing field, evidently larger and stronger, and people are increasingly reluctant to speak out about it for fear of being called ist.

As has been said before. The law is well meaning.

You've said all that, without any intention to insult or offend. Your free speech has not been curtailed.

person commits an offence if they communicate material, or behave in a manner, "that a reasonable person would consider to be threatening or abusive," with the intention of stirring up hatred based on the protected characteristics.
