Pre-Diabetes

How many have you got?
Does Mrs M know about the others?
lol. There were 12 of us (6 couples) that went on holiday with the dogs over the new year. Only one that didn’t join in was Mrs Mottie who never diets as she eats in moderation and has great willpower.

Just after Christmas, I was 167kg.

I'm happy to take the spotlight off Mottie - I'm sure he won't mind being out-blubbered! :sneaky:

I too put on weight after I gave up smoking.

I've put more weight on after becoming less mobile. It is so so easy to carry on eating the same amount that you used to eat when you were more active and not realise what you're doing.

Last year, I resolved to finally do something about this situation. If I don't, I will be dead soon.

Since Christmas, I have worked on improving my diet by eating foods that are better for me.

I weighed myself just now and I am 159kg.

Now I need to work on quantities. I have started putting a recommended portion size of food (eg muesli yogurt etc) in a bowl then putting It next to the bowl of muesli that I usually have. Or the same with a portion of curry, etc...

It is actually shocking to compare and see the difference.

So, I have a long way to go and I'm sure there will be issues along the way, but I don't mind documenting my story here.

I will stop short of posting pictures of me in my undercrackers because (as Mrs S says) noone wants to see that....
You’ve made a fantastic start, I wish you every success in keeping it going.

What’s hard is breaking the cycle, because the drudgery / stress of day to day life takes over.

Well done ms mottie...

But how does she put up with you?

It’s crept up on me since I stopped smoking nearly 20 years ago. It’s easier to give up smoking than it is to cut down on food but I’m going to give it a bloody good try this time. (y) I managed to go from 17st to 15st in about 3 months when all the wives decided to go on a diet one Christmas and challenged me to join them. We all had to get weighed once a week at Boots and post copies of the weight machine ticket of our weekly weights up on a WhatsApp chat called 'fat bastards'. Six of us had a £20 bet, winner takes all. I won but I also paid up and got them all to donate to a Foodbank. That was 6 years ago though. Oh to be that size again!

I gave up smoking 15 years ago and replaced nicotine with carbs. I put a lot of weight on and felt like ****.

I don’t miss smoking now at all. I do miss cakes and biscuits. Much like nosey, I don’t snack now and find that helps a lot.

Carbs are an addictive habit and I’ll always want a toasted crumpet and a tea

And I’ve been told to stop finishing off what she leaves on her plate! I don’t have her will power - she literally stops eating when she is full even if it means leaving a forkful of mash or 5 peas on her plate! "Finish that off" I tell her. "No, I'm full" she says.

I rarely finish a meal, I am known for always saving some for the dog.

I can't move about much now so - little exercise, has its symptoms.
I rediscovered eggs, they're very filling. Studies where volunteers have eaten dozens of them in a week found almost zero effect on cholesterol.
A big breakfast would be a small portion-packet of porridge oats and one cooked egg on top. Sounds odd but I lke it. The egg takes the same time to cook as the porridge.
If my wife's out I don't bother to eat anything else much in a day. Just a couple of coffees. Not losing weight, though. Pills must have calories.
My nerves are failing. Won't be able to drive soon. Pains everywhere 24/7.

I feel embarrassed as much as I do look after myself I really let myself dowbeing other ways an abuse my body. Like getting too drunk yesterday.

Getting drunk every now and then isn’t as bad as drinking a few every night.

I’m sure your hangover will punish you enough.

This thread has made me look at my diet again.

I'm sorry to hear this. Pain is crippling and debilitating.

Have you a nurse/ doctor/ consultant who can facilitate effective management of that pain?

There’s a lot to be said for intermittent fasting or fasting in general.

I’ve done 16-8 before and it worked well. I need to get back on it
