Destroyed lintel with a drill what now?

Filling in a gap in an external wall with a piece of softwood :!: What is this external wall construction , how thick is it :?:

good old bricks ...outside leaf lintel/ gap/ piece of wood/ gap/ inner leaf lintel
There has been a piece of wood since the house was built under all the windows probably to keep the stuff from falling down and putting extra weight on plasterboard that is why they put a piece of wood in between just to avoid that gap. At least that reason makes sense in a way.. I don't see any harm by doing so if there has been no problem with it before since 1929...:)

1920s cavity closer! You could have made a proper one out of an offcut of celotex or even some mineral wool
