ITV debate

John Crace summed it thus:

It was something of a relief when it was all over. Performative politics, nothing more. Light entertainment. Sound and fury, signifying nothing. Both sides would say they had won, because that’s what always happens. As far as the studio audience was concerned, Starmer shaded it. But most of the country was probably watching Netflix.

I watched 3Body Problem. Much more entertaining.
Godzilla minus 1, a masterpiece

The twisted method of coming up with the £2k. To make it larger, use 4 years not one. Forget how the taxation actually works and comments on changes. Get some Tory advisors to produce a report and have no idea what factors they have used in terms of what Labour might or might not do.

There is another factor as well. Currently the tax allowances are frozen until 2028. Inflation level pay rises will collect more tax. Not a lot though. This info thanks to the new fiscal rules is around. That revolve around a 5 year forecast that relates to debt as a % of GDP. That must fall by some amount after 5years, LOL Come 2028 might they do the same sums again for 5 years hence and what could turn out to be possible? If inflation runs at 2% well there is a 8% change in GDP. Debt can be 8% higher or it could show a drop. Depends what is done with the money coming in and it's level.

Tory drops in NHS waiting times might be another aspect that gets a hit next. A BBC graph showed a hang on a minute based on what Sunak said. They didn't explain it much but it did show a rather small drop. It was multicoloured. That usually relates to waiting times which depends on what the NHS need to do. Eg an earlier one shown here, This includes pre covid data from 2010.

“That’s independent civil servants in the Treasury.”

What does that even mean? What are "independent civil servants"? It's obviously a carefully chosen phrase. Does it mean SPADs?

EDIT: So it seems it just means normal civil servants. I thought they meant civil servants who are separate from the normal civil service, like independent contractors. Impartial might have been a better word.

Darren Jones, the shadow deputy chief secretary to the Treasury, who obtained the Treasury letter confirming that the figure quoted by Sunak was not authorised by civil servants as he claimed (see 9.26am), said Sunak should apologise. He posted this on X.

Rachel Reeves added: Rishi Sunak lied 12 times in the debate last night about Labour’s tax plans. The truth is it’s the Conservatives who have taken the tax burden to the highest it’s been in 70 years. That is the Conservatives’ record and their legacy.
Keir Starmer should’ve had that in his pocket last night.

What a missed opportunity.

Or is it part of the plan? Are they happy that the £2,000 tax claim is the headline, even though they are being accused of lying. A lot of people might only notice the former.
It seems this was a known attack line

Starmer should’ve prepared on it better.

It’s hard facing liars, the truth doesn’t matter it’s just whatever hits home

Didn't he just ray Rubbish. Pretty fair comment really.

The triple lock plus needs an airing as well. It's based on forecasted triple lock state pension increases. At some point the full state pension exceeds the tax allowance which means pensioners with one start paying low levels of income tax. Answer increase the tax allowance for them. Not by much anyway. From thetimes website

Old basic state pension

This applies to those people who reached state pension age before April 6, 2016.
The basic pension is now £169.50 a week – or £8,814 a year.
REMEMBER: These figures are for the full basic state pension. The actual amount you get depends on your national insurance record.

Some pensioners might also get more than this if they qualified for the additional state pension – also known as the state earnings-related pension scheme (SERPS) and State Second Pension (S2P) – however this will depend on what they earned while working and whether or not they contracted out of it for a period of time.

New full state pension

This is for those reaching state pension age on or after April 6, 2016. It applies to men born on or after April 6, 1951 and women born on or after April 6, 1953.

The current new full state pension is £221.20 a week
– or £11,502.40 a year.

Just seen a bit from conservative home... seems like starmer knew it was a lie, let rishi catch himself out in a lie and will now spend the rest of the campaign banging on about how the tories cannot be trusted. They pointed to the spin room for journos after the debate when the labour strategists could not keep a straight face. Mission accomplished was the quote they have put up, now complaining that it was a labour trap....

That would explain his strange non-engagement the first eleven times Sunak mentioned it. But maybe they have been a bit too clever. This government already had a terrible reputation for lying. Labour didn't need this £2,000 tax story in the headlines.

And the Tories don't need YET ANOTHER story about lying Prime Ministers.
