ITV debate

Too late the right wing rags ran with the lie - you think the rebuttal will be front page news tomorrow?
Sunak won’t get away with it on the next debate

And he won’t get away with it so easily in interviews

But you are right, to some extent the moment has passed, Sunak got away with a lie.

I think it was half hearted. Not even a one day wonder. I read that the Tories have already been pushing this claim for weeks without any traction because the figures are invented. They say a story needs to be in the news for three days in a row to have an impact.

Invented figures for simple minds. Get Brexit done to Get Taxes Done.

Actually there was some news about the rather twisted method used to come up with the number. Nothing to do with the source. It will have been mentioned on BBC or C4.

Unlike in de Pfeffel's time, interviewers are no longer too polite to call out lying politicians.

Pleased to see the Tory lie is getting peak attention in the media.

But it is not being parroted

It is being exposed as a lie.

Darren Jones, the shadow deputy chief secretary to the Treasury, who obtained the Treasury letter confirming that the figure quoted by Sunak was not authorised by civil servants as he claimed (see 9.26am), said Sunak should apologise. He posted this on X.

Rachel Reeves added: Rishi Sunak lied 12 times in the debate last night about Labour’s tax plans. The truth is it’s the Conservatives who have taken the tax burden to the highest it’s been in 70 years. That is the Conservatives’ record and their legacy.

Victoria Derbyshire called out lying Tory minister, Claire Coutinho,

"Coutinho replied: “That’s independent civil servants in the Treasury.”

But Derbyshire then said: “I’m going to pull you up on that - they’re not independent, they’re not impartial.
“The assumptions on which the calculations are based have been made by Tory special advisers. They’re political appointees and that is misleading to voters and therefore very disrespectful.”

"Consumer champion Martin Lewis pushed Cabinet minister Claire Coutinho to apologise live on TV over the Tories claim of a £2,000 tax hike on households if Labour wins the election.

The Money Saving Expert challenged the Energy Security Secretary about the tax allegation when she appeared on ITV’s Good Morning Britain."
